Using theatre, the academy addresses issues such as gender relations, equal education and health care.

One such production addressed the issue of oral-dehydration in children who suffer from diarrhea. Running from 1978 to 1990, these performances took place in the villages around Luapula, northern Lusaka and in the northwestern provinces of Zambia.

With the recent onset of HIV/AIDS, the academy has re-focused their work to tackle sexually transmitted diseases. Tapiwa Arts and Culture Academy performs in villages, schools, urban centres and theatres around Zambia.

"We believe that the expression of our culture through the arts gives birth to joy, refreshes the spirit and breathes life into the community." Zvondai Muchenje, 2005

The Taipwa Arts and Culture Academy was established to provide the world with a better appreciation of Zambian art. The center aims to inspire, encourage and empower Zambians to embrace their art and culture and to to share their art with the world.

The Academy works with theatre groups like the Bakaya Theatre Ensemble to do community work and raise awareness. The groups use music, dance, song and drama to provide alternative social education.
